Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
This really is the FPS game of choice right now. I have played this game to
death, respawned it and played it some more! To explain how much I like this
game, I originally bought it for the PC, and after getting my PS3 I decided to
buy it for that too!
The graphics are really good and it's nice to break away from World War II which
all the previous Call of Duty's have been based on. In the single player
campaign mode you play as two different characters, one in the British SAS and
the other a U.S. Marine. Both characters battle through different environments
such as the Middle East and Russia.
The single player campaign is far better than many other campaigns I've ever
played. It's gripping and although quite short, the intensity and variety of
the campaign more than makes up for this. Plus with such a brilliant
multiplayer, you'll spend far more time fragging and head-shotting opponents
online.
Online really is where this game comes into its own, there are plenty of
different game modes (such as Free for all, Team Deathmatch, Search and Destroy
and Headquarters). There's also a Hardcore mode where you can play with a very
limited HUD and bullet damage is increased.
A new feature is the ranking system. You gain XP (Experience points) based on
number of kills and how you peformed in each match. You then progress from rank
1 all the way to rank 55 (Private to General) unlocking new weapons and
abilities along the way. If that's not enough, once you reach 55 you can enter
presige mode where basically you start again - losing everything you've earned
but get a new badge:

I personally on the PS3 entered prestige mode once, but I couldn't be bothered
doing it again. I'm quite happy at 55 with the weapons and abilities that I
like to use.
There are also challenge such as kill X amount of people with each gun, and kill
X amount of people with headshots with each gun. Doing these challenge will
unlock different scopes or silencers as well as give you new gun camoflages.
The camoflage is only really to show off your headshotting abilities to the
person watching the kill cam of when they ate your bullet.
Some other challenges will reward you with XP, helping you to level your
character much quicker, these challenges are grouped into sections which in turn
are only available at a certain rank, and as you might expect, they get
progressively harder to acomplish - one of my favourites has to be Misery Loves
Company, where you have to cook a grenade in your hand without releasing it
blowing yourself and an enemy up!
All in all, it's a very good game. For huge battles the PC is the best as it can
host many more players, but some of the standard maps are simply not designed
for 40 people to be running around in, so it can be fairly pointless as you seem
to spawn and get shot almost immediately. I found it better on the PS3, as your
progression is stored against your PSN ID, so even if you formatted the PS3, you
won't lose your rank.
